When Charlemagne's troops rampaged through the Basque lands in the late 8th century, King Ximénez asked the mythological goddess Mari for help – and paid for it with his life. Fifteen years later, his son Eneko returns home to ascend the throne, but "Christian" traitors want to prevent him from doing so. He has no choice but to embark on a dangerous quest full of monsters and magic with Irati, the foster daughter of a pagan priestess.

What you should know

A classic fantasy adventure film that boasts everything that defines the genre. And it has a lot more to offer, such as concrete historical references, folk horror motifs, and one of the recurring themes in the director's work: the conflict between preservation and progress. Epic, thrilling, and with its fantastic cinematography featuring lots of natural light, it is definitely something for the big screen. And it was made with only a fraction of the budget of comparable films.

With his second feature film, Paul Urkijo Alijo won both the Audience Award and the Best Effects Award at the premiere in Sitges in 2022. He was also nominated for five Goyas in 2023, including Best Adapted Screenplay based on a graphic novel. In addition to regular cinematographer Gorka Gómez Andreu, the cast and crew includes several others who were already involved in ERREMENTARI, such as its "demon Sartael," Eneko Sagardoy, and Itziar Ituño, known from THE HOUSE OF MONEY.
