With an iron hand, El Senor rules over his village and his own family, which is still suffering from the death of their mother. In deep mourning, the three daughters follow the strict father and his fatal search for the redeemer. Again and again, the cruel one drags in a child and announces the descent of the new Messiah. He subdues all and anyone who opposes him with brutal force. As the daughters' faith slowly fades, unspeakable evil turns against the family.
Multi-layered and beautifully photographed, LUZ: THE FLOWER OF EVIL is one of this year's festival hits. With bright and poppy colours, Juan Diego Escobar Alzate's feature film debut is reminiscent of the Bavarian Heimatfilm, if it weren't for these nasty undertones and, increasingly, deeply sinister elements that counteract the overall picture. With the finest staging, this Colombian surprise increases to a courageous folkloric horror work of art of a special kind.
