That is what it is about

Bunohan - a poor village in the middle of nowhere. Three brothers, who could not be more different, meet in their old home and get into a clinch over a piece of land. Adil, the kickboxer who had turned his back on the backwater over ten years ago. Bakar, a clever mind, but involved in corrupt machinations. And Ilham, a hardened hitman. It seems that even the spirituality of their aged father cannot bridge the gap between the estranged brothers...

What you should know

To call BUNOHAN a polarizing genre-buster would be an understatement. Elements of the dropout drama press those of the creature horror the blade in the hand. Picturesque landscape shots, a decelerated narrative pace and bloody throat cuts. It's about identity and how to deny it and turn it into money. It's about breaking with tradition and the fact that you can't escape your own past. Not even if you fight for it with all your might, like kickboxer Adil.

Direction

Dain Said's first official feature film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. At the Malaysia Film Festival, it swept eight awards, including in the "Best Film" and "Best Director" categories. The flick was Malaysia's submission for the 2012 Academy Awards. In Germany, BUNOHAN experienced an underwhelming release and succumbed to misleading marketing that touted the film as a lurid action banger. You should definitely not expect one of those here.

Dain Said, Nandita Solomon

Arriving from Kuala Lumpur will be director Dain Said and his producer Nandita Solomon , who presented their first joint work with BUNOHAN. This film is often referred to as a debut. However, it is actually Dain Said's second film, as his first was banned nationwide and only saw the light of day after BUNOHAN.
