That is what it is about

"Your name is daughter" says a middle-aged man to a young woman who comes to consciousness tied up in a place unknown to her. Nothing will happen to her, he assures her. She just has to follow a few rules, he says. The most important: play family. The kidnapper does not seem to be a sadist, but merely a loving father. He just wants his son to grow up well protected. But it soon becomes clear that only one law applies in this isolated microcosm. The word of the father! Always.

What you should know

We've seen it too many times: A kidnapping drama tips over into a revenge thriller. Corey Deshon's film doesn't follow this classic motif; yet it plays with everything we know. Supported by fabulous camerawork, this debut weaves the familiar with the unfamiliar - virtuosically and confidently. In the end, you find yourself in a nasty genre world that dances with ease between Lanthimos DOGTOOTH and Lynch's CHAINED, and doesn't fail to address bitter truths.

Direction

Corey Deshon was born in New York City in 1988. In recent years, he has made a name for himself as a writer and director. Among other things, Deshon wrote the screenplay for the home invasion shocker HELL IS WHERE THE HOME IS. For his feature film debut DAUGHTER, he was able to attract a renowned cast despite a low budget, including Vivien Ngô (SHAMELESS) and Casper Van Dien (STARSHIP TROOPERS), who shine in their challenging roles. It will be interesting to see how the filmmaker's journey continues.
