Shortly after the suicide of her estranged, deeply religious mother, Shoo takes on a job in the Irish countryside: she is supposed to take over the home care of a reclusive old lady. However, she is not only dismissive and stubborn, she is also terrified. Of "them". Who want to break into the house and get her. Is it all just her imagination? Soon Shoo is no longer so sure. Should she open the door to the dark cellar, which is covered in cryptic defensive symbols?
"Fréwaka" is derived from the Irish "fréamhacha" and means "roots". They play a very central role here: origins, parents, childhood experiences - how they shape our lives, our behavior, our perspectives. Slowly but unsettlingly, they give rise to a psychological borderline experience for Shoo. Inspired by Irish mythology, FRÉWAKA artfully crosses strong folk horror motifs and a haunted house atmosphere with family traumas and paranoia, culminating in a hypnotic finale.
