A Dutch village in the dark Middle Ages. Deeply religious Frieda wants a child more than anything, but God is not on her side. But the mist-shrouded forest into which she flees when butcher Gelo tries to abuse her does: a demonic being comes to her aid and executes Gelo in a wonderfully cruel manner. Frieda's dreams are subsequently haunted by a shadowy angelic woman in white. Is she in league with the devil, as the priest loudly proclaims?
A woman in the grip of a bigoted village community and unchristian phenomena: the set-up is of course reminiscent of THE VVITCH, but HERESY is much livelier, more action-packed and more offensively supernatural. It presents religion the way we love it: delusional, murderous and absolutely cold-hearted. There are also a few intoxicating VFX sequences - and, given the short running time, absolutely no room for boredom. A must for fans of atmospheric witch horror.
