That is what it is about

Soi, a deaf-mute, does not have a good time in the village. Because of her disability, she is shunned. When the charming Huynh appears in the community, the miracle healer asks for her support and later asks for her hand in marriage. But the supposedly happiest moment of her life pushes open the gate to endless horrors. For Huynh is not the nice man he pretends to be. He harbours a dark secret into which Soi is drawn deeper and deeper and from which there is no escape!

What you should know

Other countries, other customs - one would think. But the themes of hinterland, newcomer and missing women are not new to the genre. But when the strange excesses are based on the story of Vietnam's first mass murderer and the cinematic narrative is not so far removed from reality, then that is something else. High quality and thrillingly staged, KUMANTHONG is an underdog of the festival because of its origins. Wrongly so, because grinches like Huynh are not forgotten.

Direction

Unfortunately, Le Binh Giang was never able to complete his directing studies at the Ho Chi Minh University of Film and Theatre, as the script for his debut film KFC was deemed too brutal. After a rollercoaster ride of emotions, a few short films and a lot of courage, Le Binh Giang was finally able to finish his film. It promptly won awards and was ennobled with selection to the Rotterdam Film Festival. Suddenly, many things became easier. His second film KUMANTHONG is a success, especially in Indochina.
