That is what it is about

A secret society advertises a tempting offer. Men who are tired of life can sell their bodies to be possessed by a mystical apparition. The volunteers are not told what this means. First they have to wait. Christian and his roommates wait in an ancient villa and wonder whether the possession is just nonsense. Suddenly: a thunderclap as loud as if the world were exploding. And then they come. From the woods ...

What you should know

What was that? A liver hook followed by an uppercut could hardly knock you out harder than this mindfuck. Old gods like in Lovecraft. Kafkaesque creatures like in DER NEBEL. Dizzying tracking shots turn the viewer's head. Architecture and symmetry blur into a cryptic secret language. One thing is clear: THE COMPLEX FORMS is the craziest black and white trip since PI and THE LIGHTING TOWER and one of the absolute insider tips of this year's festival.

Direction

Italian filmmaker Fabio D'Orta seems to have been really convinced by his film idea. For his feature film debut THE COMPLEX FORMS, he not only wrote the screenplay and directed, but also produced, cast and edited the film. And even if special effects are not the main focus of the film, it is hard to overlook the fact that D'Orta has gained experience in this area, e.g. with his short film HOLLOW, in which he honed his dark, pessimistic visual language.
