That is what it is about

Mother Suzanne and daughter Ella are working together on a project, a stop-motion film with creepy miniature clay figures. Suzanne directs with a strict hand. After her mother falls into a coma, Ella wants to finish the short film on her own. Her mother's perfectionism, which still weighs heavily on her shoulders, makes it difficult to work. Ella threatens to break under the pressure. Then comes the saving idea: the Ashman, a boogyman made of raw meat! A brilliant idea or the first signs of madness?

What you should know

Perfectionism and pressure to perform. Burnout and sleep paralysis. Nightmarish intermediate worlds like in THE CELL. Creepy plasticine figures reminiscent of Lynch or the music videos of "Tool". A woman who psychologically loses the ground beneath her feet, as in BLACK SWAN or ANTICHRIST. These are all important set pieces. But it is the impressive performance of lead actress Aisling Franciosi (THE NIGHTINGALE) that makes the film a masterpiece. A very bloody masterpiece. A must-see!

Direction

Robert Morgan was born in 1974, grew up in Hampshire, England, and has been working as a filmmaker, director and author since 1997. It almost seems as if Morgan has done nothing else all his life like protagonist Ella, namely surreal horror stop-motion short films. His works THE CAT WITH HANDS (2001) and BOBBY YEAH (2011) won a string of awards. Is STOPMOTION autobiographical? Morgan was also responsible for the "D is for Deloused" segment in ABC's OF DEATH 2.
