Our Directors Spotlight 2024 - Ted Geoghegan

One of the centerpieces of our festival: the Directors Spotlight. The oeuvre of a filmmaker is dragged into the spotlight, scrutinized and perhaps even paid homage to a little. This year, we are more than happy not only to present the complete works of US director Ted Geoghegan, but also to welcome Ted himself as a guest in Regensburg. But who is Ted Geoghegan anyway?

Ted Geoghegan was born on August 10, 1979 in Beaverton, Oregon, USA and grew up in Great Falls, Montana. He developed a love of genre cinema at an early age. Geoghegan did not attend film school, but took a course in screenwriting taught by former actor and writer Carroll O'Connor (IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, ALL IN THE FAMILY) at the University of Montana.

At the age of 20, Geoghegan sold one of his screenplays to a major label for the first time. He was able to demonstrate his screenwriting skills with German underground filmmakers. Among others, Geoghegan wrote the screenplays for NIKOS THE IMPALER (2003) by Andeas Schnaas and BARRICADE (2007) by Timo Rose. He worked closely with VIOLENT SHIT director Schnaas in particular. He translated Schnaas' screenplay for DEMONIUM (2001) into English and helped with the filming.

In 2007, Geoghegan moved to New York City, where he worked as a publicist for the New York Asian Film Festival. It was there that he met South Korean filmmaker Ryu Seung-wan (ARAHAN), for whom he wrote the English-language screenplay for THE BERLIN FILE in 2013. Further independent writing successes followed with SWEATSHOP (2009) and SATANIC PANIC (2019). Geoghegan has also worked as a producer, e.g. in 100 TEARS (2007).

In 2015, the time had come and Geoghegan took his first seat in the director's chair. He celebrated his feature film debut with the dark haunted house horror WE ARE STILL HERE. It was on this occasion that we also became aware of the US American and WE ARE STILL HERE screened at the third HARD:LINE Film Festival 2015 as the opening film and German premiere.

In his second feature film MOHAWK (2017), Ted Geoghegan explored the fate of the indigenous people of the North American continent at the time of colonization. His current directorial work BROOKLYN 45 (2023) is screening as a German premiere at Hard:line and is a gruesome chamber play somewhere between TALK TO ME and THE HATEFUL EIGHT.

Geoghegan's career as a screenwriter and producer now includes twelve feature-length films, two short films, a science fiction novel, and soon a travelogue of horror film sets in New York City. Ted's career has fascinated us and his development as a filmmaker has impressed us, which is why we are extremely proud to welcome Ted as our guest at the 11th HARD:LINE Film Festival and to dedicate this year's Director's Spotlight to him.
