Another year has passed. A lot has happened, and yet the same questions occupy us as in previous years: What does one want as a festival? What can we achieve? Where does the journey lead to in the end? We are now in our fifth year and are celebrating perhaps the most important edition of a festival. From here on, it is commonly said, a festival is put on the festival map. We are still as wild and impetuous as we were in the beginning, and we sincerely hope that we will be able to keep this up for many years to come. That's the only way to be ready to take a chance and jump headlong into a venture.

At the same time, however, the festival is gaining in attention, maturity and professionalism. How does all this come together? Well, we don't really know ourselves. We'll just get going, go our own way and be happy if you join us. Together we'll navigate the shoals of the dark side of entertainment. We'll show you mutant mothers, ill-tempered desert dwellers and sinister killers. We celebrate road movies, samurai madness and wonderfully quirky animated monsters. We certainly don't forget sophisticated genre cinema and therefore have milestones as well as works of art in our programme. To cut a long story short, you will once again be able to enjoy "extreme cinema" in all its facets.

It's clear that not everyone's taste is catered for. But we promise that we have a suitable film in the programme for each of you out there. HARD:LINE 5 will be loud, wild, bad, nasty, disgusting, fun, hard, intelligent, appealing, intense and innovative. HARD:LINE 5 presents you with more international guests than ever before. HARD:LINE 5 is celebrating a party to which we would like to invite you. Because it remains the same: without an audience we are nothing! Thank you for being here!

The fifth festival and it was time to kick some ass. We celebrated more premieres this year than ever before. So it was quickly clear that there should also be more guests than ever before at the premieres. Actors, directors, producers and even marketing managers mainly from Spain and Canada came to Regensburg to celebrate FestEvil with us... and it was great!

First, of course, there was the Directors Spotlight, where Canadian director Chad Archibald came to Regensburg to give all three films the right setting: THE DROWNSMAN, BITE and THE HERETICS. Archibald turned out to be a fantastic guest and we learned a lot of exciting things about him and his films. Chris Benn aka "Benner" came to the Danube with him, who accompanied the trip as marketing manager of Black Fawn Films.

Ry Barrett was in front of the camera for several films at this festival edition(THE DROWNSMAN, DEATH ON SCENIC DRIVE and THE HERETICS). The likeable, hunky Canadian was not only available as an interviewee, but was also happy to whip out a signing pen for the film fans. Barrett was the focus of Chad Archibald's films, but also of our next guest.

Also from Guelph, Gabriel Carrer visited us to attend the world premiere of DEATH ON SCENIC DRIVE and answer our questions. Here, too, Ry Barrett was seen in one of the two main roles.

The Spanish independent production COMPULSION was one of the big surprises, not only for the team but also for the fans. The many positive voices could be addressed directly to director Ángel Gonzales Martinez. José Pastor as producer also knew how to reveal some interesting aspects.

What happened on the screen in THE NIGHT OF THE VIRGIN was sometimes the most absurd thing we have seen in a long time. So we dragged director Roberto San Sebastian on stage to Regensburg by the intestines hanging out of his anus, so to speak, to find out what he was thinking. Co-producer Lander Castro was also on board.

Directors Spotlight

Director Spotlight 2017, Chad Archibald

Actually, Chad and his buddies were just bored when they tackled their first film. But boredom can be oil on the fire of creativity, speaks a thesis to be tested. Talent, desire and skill are undoubtedly ingredients to make the claim true.

Chad's story reads like a fairy tale for film nerds: as a schoolboy, he happens to have access to a camera and just goes for it. Without any experience with film, the result is anything but perfect. Instead of just throwing it away, the young Canadian begins to correct his mistakes and dubs the entire film in his basement. His first steps sell to Lionsgate and Arts Alliance and enable him to work on further projects...

Chad's films are characterised by an irrepressible passion for the genre. He loves to scare the child in him with his own films. But he also knows which role models have brought him there. On the surface, his films are clever variations on familiar patterns and yet, on closer inspection, they are entirely his own. But they are also the result of persistent teamwork, in which the colleagues of his production company "Black Fawn Films" sacrifice themselves for his films as well as vice versa.

Studying Chad Archibald is not just about watching his films. You should also take a closer look at his work as a screenwriter or producer. Because then you soon realise what extraordinary talent he has! Chad is a jack-of-all-trades and a director with whom the horror film world will have much pleasure!

We are very happy to have Chad as our guest of honour at the fifth HARD:LINE Film Festival!

Parties

Aftershowparty 2017

In the end, it has one big advantage if you don't play ten different locations as a festival. As a location festival, you have the opportunity to condense the entire event to just a few square metres, so that you can create a festival atmosphere when you are perhaps not even sitting in the cinema. That's why, in the fifth year of our existence, we're opening the door for highly appreciated musical entertainment in the cinema pub.

Friday: Marius Gardeia You know him by sight, but you definitely know him by sound as well. Marius Gardeia is one of those colourful dogs of the Regensburg music scene that you meet in front of and on stage. People know and appreciate him from the cinema pub, but he is also known to many as an important part of the musical monument CONTAINERHEAD.

Breaking down his musical tastes is most definitely an oversimplification, as his musical influences range from hip-hop á la WU-TANG, to KRAFTWERK, to the posthardcore gods of AT THE DRIVE IN. As a record entertainer, his goal is to turn the cinema pub upside down... Let's help him do it!

Saturday: Sublime Party Understanding for music streams outside the mainstream and a sense for the extraordinary has brought together some people who have established an indie event series in Regensburg: Their name SUBLIME.
What else is there to add? The DJ team manages to characterise themselves in just a few words and at the same time gets to the heart of why we love what they do. SUBLIME is the passion of discovery, the love of music and a guarantee for a fantastic evening in the cinema pub!

Final concert

Final Concert 2017, Point Baker

We have a close friendship with the Regensburg music collective GHOST TOWN NOIZE. As a festival that also sees itself as a platform for the subcultural impulses of a city, it is a gift to have these musical free spirits on board. Last year, we couldn't help but be amazed when the two local greats CONTAINERHEAD and DIAMOND DOGS merged into an unforgettable mix and offered us a concert in a class of its own. That's why we are especially happy that GHOST TOWN NOIZE is organising the musical part of the closing night again this year. For the fifth HARD:LINE Festival they even break the chains of their own label.

To describe POINT BAKER is to go a long way. With their mixture of indie rock and folk, the quartet takes us to almost endless, barren landscapes with endlessly long highways under the scorching heat of the American southern states. The melancholic, pointed sound whispers stories of America and country in our ears, shows us dusty roads, passing wooden power poles, diner counters... yes, above all that... Get a beer, toast and enjoy the tour!

Blink & Remove will be responsible for the visual stimuli again this year. Ralf is a brilliant companion as a VJ who will round off the musical journey visually.
